Buy-to-Let Named Most Popular UK Business

According to a recent article from Hamptons, there are currently more companies established to hold buy-to-let properties registered at Companies House than any other type of business.

Currently, there are more than 400,000 buy-to-let companies in the UK. That's almost FOUR times as many buy-to-let companies as there are fast food outlets or hairdressers!

In 2024 alone, 61,517 new BTL limited companies were established, representing a 23% increase from the previous record set in 2023.

There are 680,000 buy-to-let properties held in a limited company structure across England & Wales, with the number rising by 70,000 to 100,000 annually.

Companies House maintains a central database of UK companies. BTL companies can be identified by their SIC codes (68100 & 68209) with Company BTL Mortgages recorded in the Charges Register.

Aneisha Beveridge, Head of Research at Hamptons, says: “The limited company is now the structure of choice for the next generation of investors, despite UK's Largest Lenders not offering LTD Company BTL mortgages.
